As a volunteer at Chisholme House you are appreciated for who you are, not only for what you do.
This is a place of great beauty set in the heart of the Scottish Borders. The 187 acre estate offers an ideal space in which to retreat, engage in study and experience the reviving effect of being close to nature.
Volunteers are a vital part of life here. You may be involved in diverse activities ranging from working in the organic gardens, to cooking a feast, tree planting, splitting timber, putting up yurts or caring for chickens. As a volunteer, you are welcome to participate in all aspects of the Institute including study and meditation if you wish.
Free volunteers may come at any time of the year, but are encouraged to come outside our volunteer weeks (see calendar on our website). Normally free volunteers come for one or two weeks. Longer stays may be possible after the initial two weeks.
Vegetarian meals can be provided. Regrettably we cannot cater to anyone with special dietary requirements (e.g., gluten-free, sugar-free, dairy-free, etc.) but you are more than welcome to bring your own food. We cannot accept pets.
This has been a school for over forty years, in which time Chisholme has become a unique setting for a complete education in what it means to be human.

About the Host : Richard G
Chisholme is here for those who seek to know themselves essentially and to understand the reality of the world in which we live.
The guiding principle here is the essential Unity of all Existence, a wholly inclusive perspective, not limited by dogma or religious considerations. This perspective, which lies at the heart of the great wisdom traditions, is of particular relevance today.
Located on a beautiful 187-acre estate in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, Chisholme offers both the context and the support for such self-discovery. The main house looks out over glorious landscaped grounds, and woods of native trees encircle the estate.
The ongoing programme includes text-based study retreats, immersive courses living in woodland yurts, and the longer intensive Discovering Unity retreats during the winter months.
Volunteers from around the world make a huge contribution to the life of the place, and visitors are welcome all year to get a taste of what Chisholme can offer.
